We’ve shared a lot of “wow!” moments on our hikes over the years. The incredible beauty of Colorado is truly awe-inspiring!
It turns out that regularly experiencing awe isn’t just enjoyable – it actually supports our health and wellbeing. Awe (described as an overwhelming feeling of respect, amazement or wonder) has some surprising, science-backed health benefits. It’s been shown to improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and enhance creativity. Regular experiences of awe also boost the immune system, lower blood pressure and reduce inflammation.
One of the most interesting findings is that awe tends to “shrink the self”, helping us think beyond our own narrow perspective. Because of that, it makes us more likely to behave in ways that build community and connection.
This photo is from a recent hike at Rocky Mountain National Park. Walking through the forest, we felt so small next to these majestic trees. Lots of awe moments (with all the benefits!) that day!
