South Platte River Trailhead to Little Scraggy Trailhead
This post is part of a series featuring Jana’s journal entries from her Colorado Trail thru-hike
Day 2 ~ Segment 2 is known for lots of heat, no shade, and no water for 11 miles due to the burn scar! We got up at 3:45am and were on the trail by 5:00am. We thought packing up would be a bit quicker. We carried 4 liters of water each. It wasn’t as bad as all the hype, but in the burn scar areas, the hot was HOT. The fire station is at the end of Segment 2 (you see it coming for miles and you think you are much closer). That was the best water I’ve ever had!
We met our first trail angel, Elderberry. She had some cookies, fruit, and Gatorade. We kept going to get into Segment 3 since we had such an early start to the day.
